Morris helps everyone to belong

Zac Morris was only 21 when he left his friends, family, and home in Egypt behind to pursue an education in South Korea. Seven years later in 1991, he stepped out of his comfort zone again and moved to Australia.

Now working as a Postal Service Officer in our Broadway Post Office, Morris recently celebrated his 30-year anniversary with Australia Post.

Reflecting on his journey so far, Morris shared that it wasn’t always easy to fit in. He stood out, being the first Egyptian to attend his university in South Korea studying the Korean language.

"The culture was different, the food was different, and the weather was minus 14!," he said. "Coming to Australia after that was easier. I wasn’t a student anymore, I was in a different stage of life.”

Facing a different kind of challenge, Morris who was originally a history teacher, found it difficult to adapt to the different culture and school environment.

“When I arrived, I was scared to teach in Australian Schools. It wasn’t for me at the time, so I applied for the role at Australia Post. I didn’t think I would stay 30 years, but it has happened,” he said.

Morris loves the opportunity to help people both at work and in the community. He regularly volunteers on a radio talk show sharing his experience of migrating to Korea.

Having a diverse background enables Morris to delight our customers every day.

“Because I also speak Arabic and Korean I meet a lot of people from different backgrounds who come in to the post office. They are always very happy to have someone who can help them and make them feel comfortable instantly.

“I spend time with customers showing them around the post office and helping them understand the products and services we offer. They come back again and again,” he said.

Here at Australia Post, we’re proud that our team is made up of 134 nationalities.

“It’s extremely important for Australia Post to be diverse as we have a lot of migrants in Australia,” Morris said.

When it comes to creating an environment where everyone feels they belong, Morris’ advice is to always be open-minded and accepting of everyone regardless of where they are from.
