Introducing our 2023 Inside Australian Online Shopping Report
Today, Australia Post released our 2023 Inside Australian Online Shopping Report, providing exclusive insight into what made Aussies hit the purchase button in the past year.
Now in its 8th year, our annual online shopping report is a valuable tool to help eCommerce retailers drive their business strategy. Using our exclusive deliveries data, consumer research and customer case studies, the report uncovers the emerging trends in eCommerce, how shoppers are responding and offers predictions and growth opportunities for retailers to explore.
What this year’s report tells us
This year’s report reveals that Australians were out to spend in 2022 – and spend they did! A record $63.8 billion was spent online in 2022, with 9.4 million households shopping online; that’s 82 per cent of all Australian households.
This year, customers spent the most on home and garden, a category which traditionally has more expensive items like furniture and electronic goods, however the overall growth in online spend was driven by food and liquor stores, and variety stores like Myer and Target.
EGM Parcel, Post, and eCommerce Services Gary Starr said while the number of online purchases softened nationally, down by 2.6 per cent with the re-opening of stores, the way we work, live and shop shifted in the pandemic and that shift is here to stay.
“Aussies’ love affair with online shopping has not waned, even with restrictions removed. One million more households are now shopping online compared to 2019 and 5.6 million households made an online purchase every month during the past year.
“The trend is a positive one and we expect this to continue. Over the next ten years, eCommerce will grow at a faster rate than overall retail, and by 2033, one in every three dollars will be made online,” Garry added.
The report also acknowledged that although today’s online shoppers are comfortable sharing their dollars across retailers, cost-of-living pressures continue to take effect and overall consumers are more cautious in their spending.
