Brightening up our posties’ days

Posties and locals in Port Macquarie (NSW) have been treated to some new colour, after local Indigenous teenager, and proud Melekerdee James, painted an Indigenous artwork one of the area’s depot boxes recently.

13-year-old James, approached Australia Post and local Indigenous custodian community representatives seeking permission to paint the box after seeing it covered in graffiti. Along with older brother, Zach who helped out, James painted an incredible stingray, which is a totem of the Birpai Nation and representative of the local lands where he’s lived his whole life.

The stingray symbolises the ancestral link between the natural world and kinship relationships with spiritual beliefs and personal responsibilities.

James is a current Nipper at the local lifesaving club, and swims daily at Flynn’s beach where he regularly sees stingrays.

A depot box is where posties can collect additional mail that has been stored in the box for them to collect, so they don’t have to keep going to back to their facility mid-route to refill their panier bags or storage compartments in their vehicles.
