Creating Food and Connection in the Desert

In 2021 Linda Wilson from the Alice Springs Post Office nominated the Arid Lands Environment Centre (ALEC) Westside Community Garden project for the People of Post Grants program.

“I think gardening helps to get people outside, provides exercise and helps improve mental health,” said Linda. “I’m very keen to volunteer at our Garden!”

ALEC works with individuals and groups to find solutions to the environmental challenges facing Outback communities - ensuring a hopeful, resilient and sustainable future in the desert. Their 2021 People of Post Grant helped the group to purchase new tools and equipment to maintain the Westside Community Garden.

“The provision of safe and effective tools for community volunteer working bees has been appreciated by all. The garden is now attractive, fertile and abundant, which will encourage many new people to join our garden community,” said Kaz Phillips, Alice Springs Community Garden Network Coordinator.

“To have the opportunity to purchase some new tools such as this has been a real treat.”
