Knitting A Community Together

Maria Tessari from the Customer Contact Centre Southern nominated Mitcham Charity Knitters for a 2021 People of Post Grant.

Mitcham Charity Knitters was formed by like-minded people who wanted to help vulnerable people in their local community with their crafts. They used their 2021 grant to purchase the yarn required to create adult booties, mittens, scarves and beanies for vulnerable community members.

“The biggest community assistance is to the ladies who are in the group,” said Edith, Mitcham Charity Knitters Assistant Director.

“Many of our members live on their own, and this group gives them a sense of inclusion, community and achievement.”

The Mitcham Knitters make and donate a number of items for local organisations – including blankets, gloves and beanies for people experiencing homelessness and baby wear for preemie babies.

“Doing this has made me feel honoured because I know the organisations and people we provided our blankets and garments to really appreciate it,” said Maria.

“For me to give that little bit of time to make another person happy and comfortable is nothing.”
